The Mines and Skull Cavern are crawling with monsters, and the right weapon saves you many trips to the clinic. This guide covers the traits of all three weapon types, recommended paths, and weapon loadouts by mine depth.
Stardew Valley's weapons fall into three categories — sword, dagger, and club — each with different attack patterns and use cases.
| Type | Attack Pattern | Attack Speed | Range | Traits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ⚔️ Sword | Slash + upthrust | Medium | Medium (frontal arc) | Best all-around; balanced offense and defense; can block |
| 🗡️ Dagger | Fast repeated stabs | Very fast | Short (directly ahead) | High DPS but short range; needs you to be in their face |
| 🪓 Club | Heavy ground slam | Slow | Large (circular) | Strong knockback and wide area; great for crowds |
New players should pick the sword first — balanced offense and defense with high forgiveness. Dagger is for players who like high-action play. The club's knockback is extremely useful when swarmed.
Weapons come mainly from mine chests, monster drops, and the Adventurer's Guild. Here's the typical progression:
Bring a Prismatic Shard to the three pillars in the northwest corner of the desert to trigger an event that converts the shard into the Galaxy Sword. It's one of the strongest swords in the game — make sure to craft a Prismatic Shard and get it as soon as you can mine iridium.
Monster strength varies greatly by depth. The table below suggests a weapon loadout for each stage:
| Mine Level | Main Monsters | Recommended Weapon | How To Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Levels 1–20 | Slimes, Bats, Flies | Steel Shortsword / Inlaid Cutter | Chest / Guild purchase |
| Levels 21–40 | Frost Slimes, Dust Sprites | Neptune's Glaive | Chest pickup |
| Levels 41–60 | Ghost, Dust Sprite | Shadow Fang | Guild purchase (4,500G) |
| Levels 61–80 | Shadow Brute, Skull Bat | Obsidian Edge | Guild purchase |
| Levels 81–120 | Shadow Shaman, Dinosaur | Lava Katana | Mine chest / Guild purchase |
| Skull Cavern | Mutant Fly, Mummy | Galaxy Sword | Prismatic Shard offering |
The sword's right-click block briefly makes you invincible and knocks monsters back. It's especially handy against groups of flying monsters — don't just focus on offense.
Slimes have a tell before they hop toward you — sidestep early for a damage-free kill. When bats approach, just swing your sword; don't run around wildly.
Clubs and heavy strikes have strong knockback, letting you push monsters into corners or traps. Against crowds, pick off stragglers first.
Bring plenty of food (heals HP + energy), Life Elixirs, and bombs before heading into the mines. They can save your life in an emergency.
Beyond weapons, rings and boots also significantly boost combat power:
Sword build: Topaz + Ruby (defense + attack). Dagger build: Aquamarine + Jade (maximize crits).
The Guild is east of the Mines and requires killing 10 Slimes to enter. The Guild merchant unlocks better weapons and rings as you level up, and it's the main source of mid- to late-game weapons. The Guild also has a "kill goal" system — completing specified kills unlocks rare weapons (e.g., completing the bat kill goal earns a life-steal ring).
Knowing each monster's behavior and weakness is key to efficient combat. Below are the main monsters by mine depth:
| Monster | Where It Appears | Behavior | Weakness / Counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green Slime | Mine levels 1–120 | Hops toward you; has a tell before attacking | Sidestep then counter; sword slash |
| Blue Slime | Mine levels 41–120 | More HP, higher damage | Same as above, but takes more hits |
| Red Slime | Mine levels 81–120 | Most HP, may drop rare items | Knock back with a club and pick off one by one |
| Bat | Mine levels 31–120 | Flies toward you and dives | Sword upthrust or dagger stabs; mind the timing |
| Fly | Mine levels 16–29 | Flies, fairly slow | Sword slash works; keep your distance |
| Dust Sprite | Mine levels 41–80 | Crawls on the ground, may steal items | Kill first to avoid theft |
| Dust Sprite (swarms) | Mine levels 41–80 | Appears in groups, moves fast | Use club's area attack to clear crowds |
| Shadow Brute | Mine levels 81–120 | Grounded, high damage | Sword plus blocking; don't trade blows head-on |
| Shadow Shaman | Mine levels 81–120 | Ranged magic attacks | Close in fast and burst down with dagger stabs |
| Skull Bat | Mine levels 81–120 | Flies, high HP | Sword upthrust; watch your dodging |
| Dinosaur | Mine levels 81–120 / Skull Cavern | Grounded, breathes fire | Keep your distance, counter between fire breaths |
| Mummy | Skull Cavern | Can't truly die — needs a bomb to finish | Bomb it to pieces, or it revives |
| Mutant Fly | Skull Cavern | Flies, high damage | Sword block + counter |
| Snake | Skull Cavern | Fast movement | Use club knockback to control distance |
The sword's upthrust is most effective against flying monsters (bats, flies). Use the club's area attack against grounded crowds. For ranged monsters (Shadow Shaman), close in fast. Mummies are the only monster that need special handling (bombs), so remember to bring bombs before heading into Skull Cavern.
The regular Mines and Skull Cavern differ greatly in monster strength and terrain, requiring different strategies:
Skull Cavern is in the desert, far harder than the regular Mines, and the main source of iridium and Prismatic Shards:
Bring 50+ staircases (Mining level 2 recipe, crafted from 99 stone). On floors with no iridium, drop a staircase and descend. Aim for depth 50+, where iridium nodes are dense — a few bombs can yield 20+ iridium ore in one go.
In the mines, HP and energy matter equally — mismanage them and all your progress is lost:
Cheese is the top pick for mine runs — one cow produces a Large Milk daily (high quality makes Large Cheese), so a week's worth is 7 cheeses. Bring 10–20 cheeses per run for a full day of exploration. Spicy Eel is also great — Ginger Island chili + eel, with balanced HP and energy restoration.
Before heading into Skull Cavern or deep regular Mines, make sure you have:
| Category | Item | Quantity | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Galaxy Sword / Galaxy Blade | 1 | Main weapon |
| Rings | Iridium Ring + Topaz Ring | 2 | Crit + sustain |
| Boots | Space Boots / Fire Boots | 1 | High defense |
| Food | Cheese / Spicy Eel | 15–20 | Heal HP and energy |
| Elixir | Life Elixir | 2–3 | Emergency heal |
| Bombs | Cherry Bomb / Bomb / Mega Bomb | 20–50 | Blast ore and crowds |
| Stairs | Staircase | 20–50 | Fast-descent to deep levels |
| Return | Return Totem / Return Scepter | 1–2 | Emergency retreat |
| Coffee | Coffee / Triple Shot Espresso | 1–2 | Boosts movement speed |
| Luck | Lucky Lunch | 1 | Boosts daily luck |
Bombs are a high-efficiency mining tool, blasting lots of rock and ore at once and saving huge amounts of time:
| Bomb Type | Crafting Materials | Blast Radius | Main Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cherry Bomb | 4 Copper Ore + 1 Coal | Small (3×3) | Blast small rock clusters; early game |
| Bomb | 4 Iron Ore + 1 Coal | Medium (5×5) | Blast ore clusters; mid-game mainstay |
| Mega Bomb | 4 Gold Ore + 1 Solar Essence + 1 Void Essence | Large (7×7) | Blast big rock clusters and crowds; late game |
Early game (copper/iron), manual mining is more cost-effective since you need Mining XP to level up. Late game (gold/iridium), bombs are far more efficient than manual mining — a single Mega Bomb clears half a floor's ore and saves dozens of Pickaxe swings. But note: bombed ore gives no XP, so until Mining is maxed you should still hand-mine some.
Boots provide defense and immunity bonuses and are key to survival. They mainly come from mine chests:
| Boots | Defense | Immunity | How To Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather Boots | 1 | 0 | Initial |
| Military Boots | 3 | 1 | Mine level 20 chest |
| Battle Boots | 5 | 2 | Mine level 40 chest |
| Fire Boots | 7 | 3 | Mine level 80 chest |
| Space Boots | 8 | 4 | Mine level 110 chest |
| Genie Shoes | 9 | 5 | Skull Cavern chest |
| Dragon Scale Boots | 10 | 6 | Deep Skull Cavern chest |
Defense reduces physical damage taken; immunity reduces the chance of being afflicted by status effects (like freeze or burn). Before heading into Skull Cavern, make sure to equip Space Boots or better — otherwise a single hit can take half your HP.
